I recently wrote an essay about the differences between iPhones and Androids. Androids are seemingly ahead of the curve when it comes to advanced technology, faster processing, better programs, and other things that could be considered lackluster in the Apple products, yet iPhones outsell Androids in the US by about 24% (as of 2018). I believe that the biggest reason more Americans buy Apple over Android is the iPhone's simple, easy to use interface. Apps are easily identifiable, settings are easy to access, and everything is right in front of the user, whereas Androids typically have slightly more complicated interfaces, with apps not necessarily right in front of you, and settings a bit more ambiguous (from personal use of my old Android phone). This seems to be a selling point to the majority of the population, and for that reason, I'd say it's a very effective design.
