When I took History of Graphic Design, we discussed why Lester Beall was an important person to graphic design. His series of posters for the Rural Electrification Administration are now at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMa). The Rural Electrification Administration was created in 1935 to bring electricity to rural areas. These posters were hanged in public places to raise awareness. The layout of these posters consisted of simple images such as a light bubble, a water faucet, or a house receiving radio waves with text reinforcing what is occurring, so viewers do not misinterpret the message. At the bottom of the poster, the words “Rural Electrification Administration” in written to tell the readers what this poster is trying to do. The message clearly states that the Rural Electrification Administration is trying to bring electricity to rural areas, so they can have electricity for proper lighting, running water, and have a radio to listen to the news or entertainment. The simplicity of the images, the plain colored background, and simple text makes it easy for viewers to interpret the message due to a lack of competition of elements in the layout. There is no fancy language trying to persuade viewers to support the Rural Electrification Administration only a visual representation saying why Rural Electrification Administration is needed to create a better life for people in rural areas.
