LOVE is a sculpture located in front of the Shinjuku i-Land skyscraper in Nishi-Shinjuku, Japan. It serves as a popular spot for the local people to meetup and has been featured in many forms of media including the anime Durarara!!. The piece was designed by an American artist named Robert Indiana. LOVE is known for its tilted “O” which adds interest to the piece. The artist’s use of bright red for the exterior of the letters with alternating blue and green interiors makes the sculpture stand out from a distance even in its urban environment. Its large size also adds emphasis to its presence and reinforces the idea that “love” can have a large impact on a person’s life the same way this piece has a large impact on its environment. An interesting rumor about this sculpture that connects to the its meaning is that if one can pass between the “V” and “E” without touching the sculpture’s interior walls, their love will be reciprocated. Although I have never seen the piece in person, its appearance in several different forms of media are a testimony of how big of an impact this sculpture has had on others beyond those around its physical environment.
