Banksy is one of my favorite street artists. His work is inspiring and full of dark humor and satirical commentary on social problems. During his trip to Gaza after the 50-day conflict between the Hamas and Israel which resulted in the deaths of thousands and the destruction of many homes and buildings, he created several murals on destroyed buildings. The mural of a white kitten with a red bow is painted on a wall of a destroyed home and is framed by buildings in ruin and rubble. When asked why he created this image, Banksy replied that he wanted to highlight the destruction in Gaza by posting an image on the internet “but… people only look at pictures of kittens.” This mural is a form of protest because he is speaking out to the world about the social injustices happening in Gaza. People in Gaza cannot leave, and many people go without electricity and drinking water. This mural is a satirical jab at society for ignoring the dangerous reality these people have to live in. This image is very well-designed because it uses juxtaposition to communicate by contrasting a playful kitten with the horrors of war. Many first world societies are guilty of ignoring people in need. They preach equality and peace, but often times they look at pictures of human suffering and say, “that’s sad” and do nothing about it. Images like this reflect the dark reality of modern-day society.
