Sony PlayStation DualShock Controller Design 1997 -- 2019

Pictured are four video game controllers, designed and distributed by two seperate companies, Nintendo and Sony. On the bottom row lie two controllers by Nintendo -- on the left, a controller for the Nintendo 64, circa 1996 - 2001, and on the right, a controller for their latest console, the Nintendo Switch, released in 2017. On the top row, likewise, lie two controllers released by Sony -- marketed as the “DualShock” controller brand. The left controller is from 1997, while the right controller is from 2016. Sony’s controller design has changed very little over the course of twenty years -- if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Unique to the DualShock controllers are the twin joysticks, the left-dominant d-pad, and the ever-iconic four-letter-four-color button setup memorized by players for two decades of play and competition. Sony’s controllers have a unified identity, very easily recognizable from its competition.
