Typography #2

The Walmart logo is an excellent example of the amount of work that can go into something as simple as a letter. It appears to be a standard font at first glance, however closer inspection proves that a lot of time was spent shaping each letter. Several of the letters, most notably the "W", feature curves on the left sides of their strokes and a much more abrupt corner on the right side of the stroke. This gives the name a calligraphic appearance, as if it were written by a giant blue marker. The bottom of the "a" is also carefully considered, with the bottoms falling shortly below the baseline of the other letters. This is because the human eye naturally perceives circular objects differently than straight, blocky objects. If the "a" were truly on the same level as the other letters, it would appear to be slightly above the baseline. By dropping them slightly, the typographers who designed this logo were able to trick us into seeing the logo the way it SHOULD look, not how it would REALLY look.
