Shepard Fairey is a well-known street artist and graphic designer. Many people recognize his iconic piece titled “Hope” which features Barack Obama. He recently made a series of posters called “We The People” which features the image of a Muslim, a Latino, and an African-American woman. These three groups have been targeted by Trump during his campaign and have faced criticism from Americans. These minorities have been blamed and mistreated for issues in America and these posters serve as the artist’s way of speaking out about this. By displaying these images of women from minorities in red, white, and blue the artist is making a statement about patriotism. The Muslim’s woman khimar is designed to look like an American flag showing her patriotism and represents the melting pot America is proud to be. America is a nation of immigrants and the caption at the bottom of the poster, “We The People Are Greater Than Fear” is a jab at the fear of terrorism and immigration that has run rampant in America. The artist wants to remind Americans that a true American does not discriminate or demonize a minority. The artist wishes to disrupt the rising wave of hate and prejudice that has appeared in America by using these beautiful and strong images of these women. The posters are well-designed because they have a strong presence that would stand out on any wall and are straight forward in their message.
