When the New Jersey Performing Arts Center was recasting their building, Paula Scher was asked to design something that would fit their limited budget. So, she took an image of the building into Photoshop and made a layout of what it would look like when painted. It was agreed upon that the building was going to be painted white with gray and black on the trim and roof. She had typography painted on the top half of the building and on the air conditioning ducts to make them more appealing. She used a sans serif typeface and the words were painted yellow or white with black outlines. She used different type sizes and placed the text in different positions to give the building an energetic feeling. She used words such as “theater,” “music,” “poetry,” “writing,” “drama,” and “dance” on the buildings to represent the performing arts that are held there. Her design solution was brilliant. Although the facade of the building does not seem contemporary, Paula’s design makes it seem urban and it pops out from its surroundings. The typography itself is literally “performing” due to its alternations in size and position. Her design makes people want to stop and read the words. #Environmental
