On NASA’s website there is a section called “Exoplanet Exploration: Planets Beyond Our Solar System” which labels the ways astronomers have been able to locate exoplanets and the number of exoplanets that have been located with each technique. In the background of this page, NASA placed an illustration of an exoplanet to help viewers visualize the topic. When I was taking astronomy, I used this website to better understand each of the techniques used to locate exoplanets. By clicking on one of the five techniques, it takes you to a separate page with a moving diagram that demonstrates the process. One design aspect I like about the page layout is additional information about each topic is placed in a drop-down bar in order to minimize the amount of information on the page. After you click “more information,” additional information appears. Since black is used as the background for the page, white sans serif text is used to give additional information about the process and bright orange headings are used to separate the text into different topics. To look at the other methods of locating exoplanets the designer placed a bar at the top of the page so the viewer can click to them. Additionally, a button is placed at the bottom of the page with a label telling the viewer what method is listed on the next page for them to click on. The website's layout is clean and well organized. There are no hard to read fonts and the colors the type is displayed in is easy to read against the dark background. The moving diagrams are more complex than a 2D image but are well animated to help convey the concept. Overall, the designer is aware of the importance of creating an organized layout that allows viewers to easily move through each page with ease.
