Paula Scher designed a series of posters for the play “Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk.” The poster consists of a black and white image of a dancer on a bright yellow background surrounded by the Public Theater’s logo and additional information about the play. What I like most about this piece is how Paula used wood type to create a contemporary poster. She used many type sizes, weights, and extended and condensed type. She gives the type an urban feel by placing it in different positions (horizontal, vertical, and diagonal) making the type fit together like a puzzle. The typography reflects the dynamic motion of the dancer in the image making nothing seem stagnant on the poster. The typography's unique layout and the bright yellow background contrasts well with the black and white image and the black text. This makes it standout from its surroundings when it is posted on a wall. It is definitely eye-catching, meaning it was designed well since it is supposed to catch the eye of consumers to pique their interest into seeing the play. Posters like this remind me of the possibilities one can do with type by using words as an image rather than just a catalyst to convey a message.
