“Zang Tumb Tumb” is a sound poem written by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti. Filippo breaks many typographic rules in his poems in order to create nonsense poems that convey sounds rather than tell a message. This poem is supposed to express the sounds of mechanized war such as artillery and explosions. His use of different font weights, sizes, and letter spacing, along with the irregular placement emphasizes the absurdity of the nonsensical sounds of the poem is made up of. The design the poet uses is reminiscent of the chaos of a war zone. The strangeness of the poem and its layout is what makes it so appealing. It has an exciting and refreshing look to it that makes it fun to read these words aloud. This is a good example that not all type needs to be placed in perfect horizontal rows with uniform weights and sizes. This poem would not have the same impact if it was laid out that way.
