In an interview, Paula Scher stated that when asked to design the environmental graphics for the 54th Street parking garage in New York City she said the city ordinance had very strict laws about the size of the signage they could put up on the outside of the building. So, the parking sign they did put on the building was very small. As a result, she put signs inside the building in order to get around this limitation and essentially made the signage inside of the building function like a typebook. She used sans serif fonts and different sizes and weights. My favorite piece of environmental graphics she put on the building is the large letters painted onto the windows of building in neon stating, “Do You Remember Where We Parked the Car?” I thought this was a witty remark to write in large neon letters that stand out and could be read from a large distance to capture people’s attention. Since a large sign stating “Parking” could not be used this was a well-designed alternative to letting drivers know that the building is a parking garage. This question is witty because people often forget where they parked their car. This sign reminds drivers they should keep this information in mind as they are leaving the parking garage to go shopping or conduct business, so they don’t have to go searching for their vehicle when they return.
