These are two examples of the benches in the subways in New York City. It is hard to argue that the first one is even a bench, as it is designed more for leaning then sitting, but they both serve a very specific. They were designed this way to prevent the homeless from sleeping on the benches in the subway. You obviously cannot lay down on the "leaning bench", and the armrests on the other prevent people from laying down and sleeping. These benches are designed with discomfort in mind- they stop people from spending too much time in one place- the bench is not theirs, and it can only be used a certain way. Furthermore, people are uncomfortable with the homeless, they tend to ignore them and stay away from them. These benches are designed to make the general public more comfortable- they don't want to see a homeless person asleep on a bench on their way to work. The "leaning bench" also had a lot of pushback from disability advocates- a leaning bar will do nothing to help a disabled person who is exhausted from their travels and needs to sit down.
