“Watching Words Move” by Ivan Chermayeff and Tom Geismar is a genius example of looking at type as an image. The artists used type to animate the words through the use of glyphs and adding and subtracting letters. They even took a comic book like approach or used the concept of a word to animate the words. A good example of the artists using the comic book approach to animate words is the word “missiles.” The tittle of the “i’s” is shot up into the air like a real missile. An example of using the concept of a word is the word “typewriter.” The artists show the concept of a typewriter by displaying an area were a “mistake” has occurred and places an l over an x in which someone will use whiteout to "delete" the strokes of the mistyped letter to leave behind the intended. These examples show the artists are critically thinking about type as more than just characters and glyphs that are put together to create a message. Rather, they think about how type could be used to create an image that the reader can interact with and have fun with. This is the mark of good design. As an artist, this book shows me that a good designer thinks outside the box. It shows me sometimes just carrying out a message is not enough because if the audience’s attention is not captivated then the message can be lost. Additionally, it shows me that type is an image and how it is laid on a page is a large factor in attracting and maintaining attention.
