This semester, I took a class called Art in the Anthropocene. Of the 3 novels we had to read, A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki was definitely my favorite. I chose to analyze the novel's cover from a typographic standpoint for this week's encounter. After renting the book from the library, I opened up the bag and my eyes immediately went to the title, then the author's name right after. Naturally, I feel like this would be the main goal of any book cover. In smaller font located around the cover are accolades the novel has received, like being a New York Times Bestseller and a flattering review by the Los Angeles Times. The imagery behind the text relates to the content of the book, but they don't overwhelm the text and draw attention away from the information. The hierarchy is evident in the fact that the most important information is front and center, while less important selling points can be found in less assertive ways. Due to all of these working parts, I'd consider this a typographically effective design.
