This is a stop sign. I pass them everyday without giving them much thought, but they are extremely important. They serve no commercial purposes, instead they exist solely to help us remain safe when driving. The design of the sign is extremely important as well. The contrast between the red and white is easy to see and beckons your attention when compared to everything else on the roadside. The fact that all stop signs are also required to have eight sides ensures that, if something were to happen to the sign that made it unreadable, it would still be recognisable as a stop sign. The letters themselves even appear to be spaced wide apart and are in all caps to make them as easy to read as possible.
