I would like to talk about an interesting aspect of environmental design from a movie. The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T is the only film written by Dr. Seuss himself. The set of the film closely resembles the illustrations of his books, with strange architecture and wild colors. However, when I watched this movie in my UCO, the design aspect that stuck with me was the signs. The signs, instead of having arrows, had actual hands pointing in the direction they indicated. This was a nice touch, as it added that Seuss-like charm that is found in his illustrations, and related back to his books without being too wild for a live-action media, and its capabilities in the 1950's. The hand simply reinforces the idea of the sign, pointing down or up or wherever it is needed.
